DigiSafe: an encrypted vault for your Indian government documents

DigiSafe is a free, offline-first vault for Indian government documents. Scan Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, Passport and more. Everything is encrypted on your device before it is stored, so nobody else can read it.

How DigiSafe works

  1. Scan or import

Photograph a document with your camera, or import images and PDFs already on your device. Edges are detected automatically and the perspective is corrected, so a card photographed at an angle comes out square.

  2. Encrypted on your device

Before anything is stored, each page is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM. The key that does it is unlocked by your PIN and only ever exists on your own devices, never on our servers.

  3. Available everywhere

Sign in on another phone or laptop with your password, enter your usual PIN, and your documents are there. They travel as encrypted bytes and are only ever readable on a device you have unlocked. Your PIN is the same on every device, and our servers never see it. They keep only a sealed check that just your devices can open.

Why your documents stay private

DigiSafe is built so that being trustworthy is not something you have to take on faith. Your documents are encrypted in your own browser before they are saved or uploaded, with a random 256-bit key that is unlocked on your device by your PIN (stretched with PBKDF2 and 310,000 iterations). That key is held in memory only and is discarded the moment you lock the vault.

What reaches our servers is encrypted bytes and nothing else. Even document names are encrypted. Somebody who took a complete copy of the database and the file storage would still hold nothing readable. That is also why nobody here can recover a vault for you: there is no key on our side to recover it with.

Frequently asked questions

Is DigiSafe free to use?

Yes. DigiSafe is completely free. There is no subscription, no advertising and no limit on how many documents you store.

Can DigiSafe read my documents?

No. Every page is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before it is saved or uploaded. Your PIN never reaches our servers, and the key that opens your documents is stored there only in a form your account password opens. Folder names, document names, page counts and file sizes are encrypted too, and folder identifiers are hashed, so the server cannot tell an Aadhaar card from a shopping list.

How do I reduce a document to under 200 KB for a government website?

Open the document in DigiSafe, tap Make it smaller and pick a limit such as 200 KB or 1 MB, as a JPG or a PDF. The smaller copy is made on your phone, so nothing is uploaded to do it, and your original stays exactly as it was.

Can I copy my PAN or Aadhaar number without opening the picture?

Yes. DigiSafe reads the numbers from your scans on your own device (PAN, Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence and date of birth) and shows them with a Copy button. When you save a new scan it also suggests the right folder.

Can I share documents with my family?

Yes. Create a family folder and add your spouse, parents or children by their email. Everyone in it can see and add documents, and the folder stays encrypted end to end, so the server cannot read it.

Which documents do I need for a passport, bank KYC or a home loan?

DigiSafe includes ready checklists for common applications in India: passport, bank account KYC, driving licence, home loan, rent agreement, vehicle transfer, insurance claims, visas and more. Each shows what you already have and what is missing, and you can share everything as one PDF or one secure link.

What happens if I forget my PIN?

You can set a new PIN using your account password. Your documents stay intact because the encryption key is unchanged. Only the lock around it is replaced. If you forget both your PIN and your password, the documents cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.

Does DigiSafe work offline?

Yes. DigiSafe is offline-first. Once your vault is set up you can open, scan and read documents with no internet connection. Changes sync to your other devices the next time you are online.

Can I use DigiSafe on more than one device?

Yes. Sign in on any device with your email and password, then enter your DigiSafe PIN. Your folders, documents and scans appear there automatically, decrypted only on that device. Your PIN is the same everywhere, and our servers never see it.

Which documents can I store in DigiSafe?

Anything you can photograph or hold as a PDF. DigiSafe ships with folders for Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, Birth Certificate, Ration Card, Vehicle RC, property papers, insurance, education certificates and medical records, and you can add your own.

Is DigiSafe an official government app?

No. DigiSafe is an independent, privately built app and is not affiliated with UIDAI, the Income Tax Department, the Election Commission of India or any government body. It is a private place to keep your own copies of your documents.

How is DigiSafe different from DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is the Government of India's official service and stores issuer-verified documents on government servers. DigiSafe is an independent app that keeps your own scans encrypted on your own device, works fully offline, and cannot read what you store. They solve different problems and can be used together.
